BACK TO MAIN INDEX

When you are ill, we want to be able to diagnose your illness as efficiently as possible. We have in-house access to many investigations.

We can offer:

  • Anticoagulation monitoring
  • Arterial doppler studies (ABPI)
  • Blood tests
  • Electrocardiogram/ECG (a measure of your heart's electrical function)
  • Spirometry (helps diagnose and monitor breathing problems like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/COPD)

Blood Results

We receive large numbers of test results electronically from the local pathology lab at Southampton General Hospital every day. Every result is reviewed by a doctor or nurse. If your results are normal they are electronically tagged as so. You can phone up one week after your sample was taken and our receptionist might be able to let you know if your result was normal. There are on occasions where your clinician requests a less commonly performed test that may take longer than 7 days to return; your clinician may advise you on this and we ask if you could wait for these patiently.

X-rays/Scans

Scan results will be dependent on the urgency of your scan, and the pace of reporting we receive back from where you had your scan. This can vary from being the same day through to weeks. Your clinician should advise you on how long you should expect to wait for the return of your result.

For any abnormal test results, and it needs urgent action we will make provisions to contact you within a reasonable time frame of us receiving your result (dependent on clinical grounds, but usually within 24hrs).

If we cannot get hold of you on the phone, or if your result needs a discussion but no immediate/urgent action, we will send you a letter asking you to book a routine phone or face-to-face appointment.

Please make sure you keep your contact details up to date.

Cervical Smear Tests

You should receive your result within about 8 weeks of your test.
